“We all have favorite places," writes Hannah, and “watercolors are the perfect travelling companion. They allow me to respond to something immediately. I am particularly drawn to open spaces, but it is the unforseen surprise of light or color as we turn a bend in the road that truly delights me.”
The Mulford Gallery in Rockland Maine described Hannah's paintings of the surrounding area as “small, jewel-like watercolors, capturing the essence of place.” Hannah's watercolors have captured this same “essence" in many of her favorite places both in the United States and abroad. Here are just a few.

Maine – Maine has always been a part of my life especially in the last decade. What attracts me above all is the light, the crisp edges and strong colors. Recently I have been working in a miniature format trying to distill my reactions and to discover new things in the familiar.

New YorkI have spent many years on Fire Island in all seasons. It has been my constant inspiration and subject. The sweep of the beach and ocean is endlessly challenging. It is a wonderful place to study the sky.

New Mexico – I have spent some time in New Mexico, certainly a big change from New England.  The space is marvellous, the colors as well. This painting illustrates that magic turn in the road when suddenly you see this vast red valley below you.

Jemez (32x43)

France – This painting is one I did during a workshop in the south of France. When you travel, the hardest thing to understand is the local color and light. I love the red roofs of Europe - reason enough to go! This painting of Arles Tower was featured on the cover of American Artist.

ChinaA trip to China some years ago was pivotal to my work. A different culture, a new landscape, unfamiliar shapes – all very exciting.  This painting of a rice field in the Anwei Province was featured in an exhibition based on the trip.

JapanAnother Asian adventure - very different from the first – equally exciting.  I exhibited a group of paintings based on Shinto motifs as well as architectural subjects in the format of the Japanese screen.
